Week 52+7 - Bed PC3

We have continued to harvest the leeks, biggest ones first.

The leaves are a bit tattered from the harsh weather over the winter, but the plants seem to be growing again now that there is a bit more light and warmth.

Week 52+5 - Bed PC3

The leeks did not grow much more over the depth of winter. The ones we harvested are reasonable diameter (given the late planting and transplanting) but they could have been transplanted deeper to get a longer blanched base - which is the part we want to eat.

Week 49 - Bed PC3

The leeks are growing well in the fair late autumn weather ...

... and we have started to harvest some.

Week 47 - Bed PC3

The leeks have grown quite a bit in the nine weeks since they were transplanted, but we did not plant them early enough for a big crop.

Week 40 - Bed PC3

The leeks seem to have recovered quickly from being transplanted, and if we get some decent weather they will continue to grow right through to winter.

Week 38 - Bed PC3

We dug this bed, broke up the hard pan, tried to remove as many stones as we could, and buried the sod to keep the existing fertility in the bed. We filled the raised bed with leeks transplants:
  • Monstruoso di Carentan - (72 transplants) an early variety that can be harvested from Oct to Jan.
This is obviously not a polycrop bed, but we are using the bed to take some of the leeks that we did not have room for in the other gardens. We sowed too many leeks, or more accurately, we did not thin them out enough.

These leeks should have been transplanted earlier, and will not likely reach a substantial size before growth slows down over winter.

Week 31 - Bed PC3

We have not got around to digging this bed. We were planning to plant another polycrop with onion, carrot and lettuce family plants, but it seems a bit late now. We will try to dig it soon so that we can plant some late or overwintering crops.
